Description

The Fence Across the North Sea in WW1

The US Navy entered WW1 in 1917, in part due to concerns about merchant shipping losses, and set about assembling and laying mines between Orkney and Norway in a hugely ambitious project known as the Northern Barrage.

Two massive US Navy bases were created in Inverness and Invergordon (Dalmore) to house and prepare over 56,000 sea mines for deployment in the North Sea.

The undertaking would eventually involve an area covering Ardersier, Strathpeffer and the Black Isle, Corpach and Kyle of Lochalsh.

In October 2019 the Inverness Local History Forum hosted a one day conference about the Northern Barrage which presented research by individuals and local groups brought together for the first time. This book, featuring over 240 photographs, is the culmination of that research with contributions from the Groam House Museum WW1 Project, High Life Highland, the Dalmore Group from Invergordon Museum and Alness Heritage Centre.
