The 1st Battalion The Highlanders were formed from the amalgamation of the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Highlanders and the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders in September 1994. The Battalions initial posting was a residential tour of Northern Ireland at Ebrington Barracks Londonderry. In 2003 the Battalion conducted a tour of Bosnia. In 2004, as part of the Army’s restructuring, the remaining Scottish infantry regiments were amalgamated into the Royal Regiment of Scotland. The Highlanders became the 4th Battalion. They would go on to serve in Iraq 2005-06 and Afghanistan in 2011. They are currently located within the Catterick Garrison.
