Description
The Queen’s Own Highlanders were formed as a result of the amalgamation of the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders and the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders on 7th February 1961. The battalion first saw active service in the Sultanate of Brunei helping to quash a rebel uprising in 1962-63. The have served in Singapore, Germany, Sharjah (Arabia), Hong Kong, Kenya, Belize and the Falkland Islands. They have also served operational tours of Northern Ireland and took part in ‘Operation Granby’ the military action to recover Kuwait from the occupying forces of Iraq. In September of 1994, the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Highlanders amalgamated with the 1st Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders to form the 1st Battalion The Highlanders.
